< Special Events >

This is not a typical special event notice.

However, since we have become aware of some preliminary School District planning (7 May 2008) regarding the future of the LHS Lawrence Tennis Center Courts, we thought the Lawrence tennis community would like to know what is being considering.

The City Parks and Recreation Department provided the following information in reply to our inquiry.

"As far as I know nothing is definite yet but the current courts are on school district property and in some of the plans the school district shows the present courts moving to the old Centennial school site and using the area for other facilities on the LHS site.  The current site and tennis courts are in bad shape and need to have major renovation or rebuilt.  We have had consistent problems with the area the courts a currently on – we have a lot of water under the courts and constantly are fighting huge cracks.  Depending on what scenario the school district decides the city and school district will work together to make sure the community does not loose the courts.  All the plans I have seen show the same number of courts being rebuilt.

Ernie Shaw, Interim Director,  Parks and Recreation Department | City of Lawrence, KS"
